A Sophisticated Treatment of Cancer Comes Through Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy or internal therapy is a type of radiation therapy that is used to diagnose cancer. This treatment method uses radiation therapy to kill cancer cells. In this form of radiotherapy, a radiation source is placed inside the area requiring treatment. Brachytherapy is an effective treatment method for cervical, breast cancer,  prostate, skin cancer and other types of tumors in the body. Unlike external beam therapy, where radiation therapy is performed high energy X-ray beam from outside the body, in brachytherapy physicians place radioactive material directly inside the tumor.

Under the brachytherapy, physicians use a higher total dose of radiation to diagnose smaller tumors possibly for the short time as well as long time. There are basically two types of this treatment, such as temporary and permanent brachytherapy. In the fist one, a radioactive material is injected inside the tumor for a certain time period and then withdrawn. It uses both low-dose rate (LDR) and high-dose rate (HDR). While in the permanent brachytherapy, radioactive seeds or pellets are placed in or near the tumor and leaved them there permanently. After sometime the radioactive level of the implants eventually diminished and remained in the body with no lasting effect.

This therapy is very effective because the affects of irradiation is much localized around the radiation sources. In addition, in the condition of movement of the tumor within body during treatment, the radiation sources will remain in their correct position in relation to the tumor. So there is less possibility of the unnecessary damage to the surrounding healthy tissues. Brachytherapy can be performed throughout the body for the treatment of several types of cancers, such as prostate cancer, gallbladder, uterus, vagina, lung, head and neck cancer, etc.
