Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine- An Effective Tracer Used To Treat Several Diseases
As a special branch of medicine and medical imaging, the nuclear medicine provides a very effective method that uses radioactive isotopes (radionuclides) and depends on the process of radioactive decay for the treatment of disease. The diagnostic nuclear medicine includes some specific procedures under which radionuclides are combined with other chemical compounds or pharmaceuticals that form radiopharmaceuticals. They have the characteristics to concentrate on the specific organs or cellular receptors.
The diagnostic nuclear medicine helps to evaluate different organ systems, such as kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, thyroid, and bones. It is a reliable method for making diagnoses and administering appropriate treatment. The therapeutic nuclear medicine may use radioactive material in a large amount, while diagnostic nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioisotopes, typically technetium-99m. It has the ability to image the extent of a disease-process in the body rather than relying on physical changes in the tissue anatomy. In order to perform treatment for a specific organ system, the radioisotope or tracer is combined with a chemical that accumulate in that system. This character of compound is called a “radiopharmaceutical agent”. The treatment is based on metabolism or binding of a ligand. The radiopharmaceuticals or diagnostic nuclear medicines rely on the tissue-destructive power of short-range ionizing radiation. Here physicians use gamma camera to detect gamma rays emitted by the tracer. The data fed into a computer system can produce information about the organ system. Such medicines are being used for along time to treat many serious diseases.
