Bone Density and Its Importance
Bone density refers to the amount of matter per cubic centimeter of bones. Loss of bone density can cause osteoporosis. Reports and statistics suggest one in 2 women, and one in 4 men, over the age of 50 suffer from osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is the most common type of bone disease. Usually, bone loss occurs gradually over years. The bone density is decreased and the structural integrity of the bone is impaired, thus making the bone more brittle. The cortex, or outer portion of the bone, becomes thinner and more porous, thus making it more prone to fractures. Surprisingly, Osteoporosis causes at least 1.3 million fractures each year in the U.S. alone. Since the disease often shows no symptoms, many people do not realize they have it until they actually break a bone.
The density of our bone depends on our diet and lifestyle. You need to follow a good healthy diet with adequate calcium and Vitamin D that can help us keep our bones strong. For basic body functions, bones store extra calcium. However, if we do not get enough calcium, our body robs our bones of this calcium and it makes our bones porous and brittle. Smoking, alcohol intake, and phosphoric acid from carbonated beverages decrease the calcium in your bones.
