Interventional neuroradiology refers the techniques used to treat blood vessel diseases, clots, tumors etc. Under the treatment procedure, small tubes or catheters are inserted into the groin artery of a patient. It is very similar to angiography but here the catheter or microcatheter travels further. Appropriate treatment of the disease is then carried out under x-ray guidance.
Interventional neuroradiology (INR) is an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited medical subspecialty in the minimally invasive image-based technologies and procedures used in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of neck, head, and spine. Neuroradiology is a special branch of radiology on the diagnosis and characterization of abnormalities of the central and peripheral nervous system.
Some primary modalities in the interventional neuroradiology include computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Physicians use a plain radiography on a limited basis and sometimes ultrasound is used, especially in the pediatric diseases. Another method is angiography that is used for diagnosis of vascular abnormalities or diagnosis and characterization of masses or other lesions. This treatment method is being replaced in many cases by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging angiography and imaging.
Interventional neuroradiology includes successful completion of a particular residency in radiology, neurosurgery or neurology. The Neurologists must complete the training in neurovascular disease in order to give a précised performance. There are some specified diseases that are typically treated by neurointerventionists. These diseases include cerebral aneurysm, brain arteriovenous malformation, stroke, traumatic vascular lesions, head and neck tumors, nosebleeds, vertebral body tumors, dural arteriovenous etc.
