MRI Versus CT Scan – Which Is Better?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to visualize detailed internal structure and limited function of the body. A very powerful magnet and pulsing radio waves are used to create the images. MRI scanners are ideal for imaging soft tissues. On the other hand, Computed tomography is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays for creating images. The radiation is passed through the body and received by a detector and then integrated by a computer to obtain cross sectional images that are displayed on the screen. MRI uses a magnetic field to produce images, and has no known side effects related to radiation exposure. One of the greatest advantages of Magnetic resonance imaging is the ability to change the contrast of the images. Small changes in the radio waves and the magnetic fields can completely change the contrast of the image. Different contrast settings are used to highlight different types of tissues. For tumor detection and identification, MRI is the preferred technique. However, CT usually is more widely available, faster, and much less expensive. CT may be enhanced by use of contrast agents which have paramagnetic properties. These elements have higher atomic number than the surrounding flesh. One example is gadolinium. Iodine use may be associated with allergic reactions.
Computed tomography technique is preferred for imaging bone structures. Patients who have received certain types of surgical clips, metallic fragments, cardiac monitors or pacemakers cannot receive an MRI. Moreover, the time taken for total testing is shorter as compared to MRI. It is also cheaper than an MRI.
