Bone density can be defined as quantity per unit of space or mass per volume. The bone mineral density denotes to the amount of minerals in a specific area of the bones that determines the health of the bones. Such density decreases as people age and creates problem later in the life. Peak bone density refers to the situation of strongest bone that generally occurs between 25 and 30 years of age. After that age bone loss begins to happen at the rate of 0.13% per year. Later, it increases to 2% per year. A bone mineral density test is able to determine the problems with density. It helps to compare several results with optimal peak bone density for a healthy young adult of that sex.
Typically the test is performed with a central dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) machine. Though, bone density test can also be performed with computed tomography or ultrasound. The result of a bone mass test is a T-score that indicates how much bone density is above or below the normal peak bone density of the age around 30 year old adult. A t score between +1 and -1 refers to the normal bone density, whereas its existence between -1 and -2.5 indicates low bone density (osteopenia).
Up to 90% of peak bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls, and in boys it is 20. Given the knowledge, high peak bone density reduces osteoporosis risk later in life. It makes sense to pay more attention to those factors that somehow affect peak bone density. This condition is largely influenced by the genetic factors (gender and race), environmental (diet and exercise habits) factors.
