Calcium-Phosphorous Balance Affects Bone Density
Calcium and Phosphorous are essential to human body. Phosphorous is the second most abundant mineral after calcium. It is also found in cells and tissues throughout the body.
Calcium and Phosphorous are the two important co-dependent nutrients that work together to build healthy bones and teeth. About 85 per cent of the phosphorous content is found in the bones and in teeth. If the phosphorous is too high in the body, the body takes calcium from the bones to bind with phosphorous thereby making the brittle and weak.
Phosphorous deficiency in the body can lead to loss of appetite, anxiety, bone pain, fragile bones, stiff joints, fatigue, irregular breathing, irritability, numbness, weakness, and weight change. In children, Phosphorous is important for development of bone and teeth. Phosphorous is found in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts, and legumes.
Osteoporosis is one of the most common bone diseases characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of the bone structure. Right amount of Calcium and Phosphorous is required for treatment of Osteoporosis. To prevent this disease it is important to consume at least 700 milligrams of phosphorus everyday. To maintain proper bone density, there has to be a delicate balance between calcium and phosphorous in the body. If the ratio of calcium-to-phosphorus is high, proper bone growth gets affected.
Phosphorous along with calcium gives rigidity to the bones and teeth. In children and infants, this component is important for proper growth and formation of bones. It is also essential to promote demineralization of bones and teeth to keep them in a healthy state.
Low phosphorous intake increases the risk of fracture and low bone mass in human body.
