Prostate Ultrasound: A Necessary Procedure for Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer
Prostate ultrasound helps in providing the images of prostate gland of men as well as surrounding tissue. This is also referred to as transrectal ultrasound. Typically, the examination requires the introduction of ultrasound probe in the patient’s rectum. The probe performs the function of sending and receiving sound waves through rectum’s wall into prostate gland located opposite the rectum.
The ultrasound helps in detecting the disorders of the prostate. During the procedure, images can be taken from various angles to enable the best view. Moreover, it also enables in determining if the size of the prostate gland has increased. Additionally, we can also detect if there is any abnormal growth of the prostate. Besides this, it also helps in diagnosing the causes for the infertility of a man.
Prostate ultrasound facilitates in diagnosis of certain symptoms. It also helps in confirming the presence or absence of a nodule which may have been felt by a doctor during the regular physical examination. Moreover, it is essential for diagnosis of prostate cancer as timely detection of abnormalities can lead to early treatment. Other symptoms such as difficulty in urination may also be detected through prostate ultrasound.
As ultrasound enables in obtaining real-time images, the procedure can also be utilized for guiding procedures like needle biopsies. If any suspicious lesion is spotted during the ultrasound, an ultrasound-guided biopsy must be conducted. In this technique a needle is introduced for sampling tissue (cells) from any abnormal area of the prostate gland. This can be later used for laboratory testing.
