Scrotal Ultrasound: A Useful Technique For Detection Of Testicles’ Disorders

Scrotal ultrasound or the ultrasound imaging of scrotum provides the images of testicles as well as surrounding tissue of a boy or man. This is the principal imaging technique utilized for detecting the disorders of testicles. Normally, the study is used for determining if a mass is present in the scrotum. In case the presence of a mass is confirmed, then the technique helps in determining if the mass is solid or cystic. Additionally, it helps in diagnosing the causes of pain in the testicles or swelling which may be due to torsion or inflammation. Besides this, scrotal ultrasound helps in identifying the causes of infertility including varicocele.

Scrotal ultrasound can also detect an undescended or absent testicle. At times, testicles may fail to grow in certain cases. The ultrasound also facilitates the identification of testicular torsion i.e. twisting of spermatic cord which contains vessels responsible for supplying blood to scrotum. Scrotal ultrasound could also be utilized for location and evaluation of masses (tumors or lumps) present in the scrotum. However, scrotal masses are mostly present outside testes. The masses present outside are mostly non-cancerous or benign. But the masses present inside the testes are cancerous or malignant. Often, abnormalities of blood vessels or collection of fluids may appear in the form of masses. This can be diagnosed through scrotal ultrasound.
