A Contrasting Study of the Strengths and Weaknesses of Ultrasonography

Every technology that has been developed in the modern times has its own benefits as well as disadvantages. In the same vein, it can be said that in the field of medical technology many techniques that have been developed that have proved to be very much effective while dealing with many of the critical diseases. But the same medical techniques have their own share of weaknesses. Ultrasonography is one technique that has found a major usage in the filed of medical science. It is an imaging technique that utilizes the ultrasound methodology. It has proven itself to be one of the biggest weapons in the arsenal of physicians. But as mentioned above it has its own share of limitations as well as weaknesses.

The advantages of Ultrasonography that has given this technique a wide acceptance are:
  • The structure of the organs are very well displayed
  • It never causes any discomfort to the patient and most importantly has no side effects
  • The images of muscles, bone surfaces as well as soft tissues can be clearly viewed using this technique
  • The ability of Ultrasonography to show live images goes a long way in rapid diagnosis
  • The equipment required is widely available and very much flexible
  • This technique can be carried out at the bedside of the patient

Some of the limitations that Ultrasonography has are:
  • Almost all the Sonographic techniques have trouble while penetrating bones
  • Only a very highly skilled professional can carry out the technique in order to get quality images as the method is complex
  • Another factor that undermines its importance is its inability to give accurate images if there is some gas present in between the organ and the transducer
  • The depth penetration of the technique is not very good. As a result there might be some difficulties in imaging organs and structures deep inside
  • Obtaining scout images is not possible with these Sonographic techniques
